Variety 1.

Like its counterparts the 1845-O and the 1846-O, the 1851-O is a condition rarity in the New Orleans half eagle series. It is not often seen in AU and higher grades and seldom with original color and surfaces.

Despite some weakness at the centers, this is actually a sharper than usual 1851-O half eagle. It shows nice natural yellow-gold and russet color with a considerable amount of underlying mint luster. The surfaces are clean and this piece has the appearance of an AU53 to AU55.

The last PCGS AU50 example to sell at auction was Stacks Bowers 11/12: 5494 which realized $3,220. A month before this, another PCGS AU50 sold for $3,290 in a Heritage sale. Neither was approved by CAC.

This date is harder to find in AU grades than most half eagles of this era from the Charlotte and Dahlonega mints yet it is priced at a comparable level.

CAC has approved this one coin in AU50 with seven finer.
