NICE ABOUT UNCIRCULATED 1846-O HALF EAGLE
The 1846-O half eagle is clearly scarcer than the 1845-O and it is only a little less often seen than the trio of dates struck from 1855 through 1857. There are likely 125-150 known with most showing extensive circulation. About Uncirculated pieces are very scarce and most seen show little–if any–original skin.
I have had the good fortune of handling a number of nice 1846-O half eagles and this piece–from a different source than the others–continues the run of choice examples. Sharply struck and very appealing to the naked eye, this coin has a splash of orange-gold at the bottom of the obverse and across much of the reverse. The surfaces are choice and a good degree of original luster remains.
Three PCGS AU53 1846-O half eagles have appeared at auction since May 2012. and they have brought between $3,055 and $3,525. I recently sold a PCGS AU50 with CAC approval for $3,500.
A pleasing coin and difficult to locate in grades higher than this.
