Large Date.
The 1842-C Large Date is by far the more available of the two varieties of half eagle produced at the Charlotte mint during 1842. It is seen most often on the EF40 to AU53 range but seldom with natural color and choice surfaces.
This dark green-gold example show plenty of dirt in the recesses of the obverse and the reverse. There are a few scattered marks seen on the obverse, mostly in the left field. The strike is excellent and this piece has very good overall eye appeal.
The last PCGS EF45 to sell at a major auction was Heritage 3/08: 1462 which realized $2,530. No CAC approved example has ever been sold at auction.
This is the finest available quality for this date and variety at less than $3,000.
CAC has approved two in this grade with only one finer.
