The 1840-O is numismatically significant as the first half eagle produced at the New Orleans mint. It is less well-known than its counterparts from Charlotte and Dahlonega (1838-C and 1838-D) but it is well undervalued in comparison. When available in AU grades, nearly all examples are flatly struck and show a lack of originality.
This nicely toned example shows crisp golden-orange hues on the obverse and reverse. There is not quite enough luster to grade it AU55 but the eye appeal is much better than most examples I have seen graded as such and this is an exceedingly attractive coin for the date and grade.
The only AU53 sold since the fall of 2011 is a PCGS coin (non-CAC) which brought $2,115 as Heritage 3/13: 4219. A non-CAC PCGS AU55 coin sold for $3,015 as Heritage 12/13: 5001 and it lacked the eye appeal that the present piece has.
One of the better values in the New Orleans gold series.
CAC has approved just two in this grade with six finer.
On hold.
