The 1838 is numismatically significant as the final year of issue for the Classic Head half eagle series. It is far more available than its branch mint brethren dated 1838 but it is harder to find than the 1834 Plain 4, 1835 and 1836, especially in Uncirculated.
This coin is notable for its lovely rich lemon-gold color and very clean surfaces. It is well struck as is typical for the issue and the only describable fault is a small old scrape on the obverse behind the lower curls.
The only PCGS MS61 example of this date to have been sold at auction in over a decade was Heritage 9/13: 6769 which sold for $4,700.
A pleasing example which is perfect for type or date purposes.
