The 1836 is a much scarcer date than the 1834 Plain 4 or the 1835 yet it sells for just a small premium. It becomes hard to locate in properly graded AU58.
This lustrous slider has minimal actual wear but there is enough cabinet friction on the obverse to justify the assigned grade. It has nice yellow-gold color at the centers with contrasting rings of reddish-gold at the borders. The surfaces are free of the usual marks.
I can find no auction records for a CAC approved AU58 example more recent than Heritage 8/11: 5509 which sold for $3,220; that coin was slabbed by PCGS. Six NGC AU58′s sold at auction in 2013, none approved by CAC, and bought between $1,763 and $2,233.
A nice type coin.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 8 finer.
