BD-1, High R-4.

The 1802/1 is a slightly better date in the Capped Bust Right half eagle series which gets no premium over more available dates such as the 1803/2, 1805 and 1806 Round 6. It is available in the higher circulated grades but few examples are seen, these days, which have natural color and choice surfaces.

This fresh-to-the-market piece is characterized by fiery reddish-gold toning which is deepest at the obverse border. There is a good deal of luster seen and the surfaces are free of significant marks. A small obverse contact mark located on the cap is not easy to see with the naked eye.

A comparable PCGS AU55 example without CAC approval sold for $9,988 as Stacks Bowers 2013 ANA: 5143.

It seems that less than 25% of all early gold in the EF and AU grades is nice enough to garner approval at CAC and the market has reacted accordingly, with these coins bringing fairly deserved premiums.

CAC has approved 14 in this grade with 39 finer.
