RARE BORDERLINE GEM 1846 TALL DATE HALF DOLLAR

WB-106; Tall Date

Varieties of 1846 half dollar are known with a Medium date and a Tall date. The latter is scarcer and it becomes quite rare in MS63 and above. The finest known is the amazing NGC MS67 Newman 2: 33471 which sold for a strong $47,000 in November 2013.

This borderline Gem is sharply struck and very original with subtle green and reddish-gold rim shades beneath an overlay of rose-grey on the obverse; the reverse shows some blues and greens over natural grey. A few tiny marks on the obverse narrowly remove this coin from an otherwise-plausible MS65 grade.

This is the only MS64+ from either service. A PCGS MS65 in an older holder brought $22,325 while an NGC MS65 brought $13,513 as Newman 2: 33470 in late 2013.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 2 finer.
