The 1894-O is numismatically significant as the final year of issue for Liberty Head half eagles from New Orleans. It is one of just three With Motto half eagles from New Orleans and it is a scarce issue in properly graded MS62.
This mostly prooflike example is an early die state with more reflectiveness than usual for the issue. The strike is a bit weak at the centers but the eye appeal is excellent on account of the aforementioned reflectiveness and splashes of natural yellow-gold color. A small mint-made black spot on Liberty’s eye serves as identification.
No CAC approved PCGS MS62 has ever sold at auction. A non-CAC MS62 1894-O half eagle graded by PCGS sold for $3,525 as Heritage 6/14: 5718.
Only two 1894-O half eagles have been graded higher than MS62 by PCGS and this example is actually not far removed from the Condition census level for the date.
CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
