This historically significant issue was struck from Union dies before the State of Louisiana took over the New Orleans mint. As a date, the 1861-O half dollar is fairly common in less Uncirculated grades but Gems are very rare and I have never personally seen a piece I would grade higher than MS65.

This lovely example shows splendid album color with rings of iridescent toning emanating from rose-gold centers. The luster is a sheen of satiny bloom while the surfaces are extremely clean safe for a tiny mint-made defect in the right obverse field.

Only three MS65 examples have traded at auction since 2006 with the last of these, slabbed by PCGS, selling for $5,288 as Heritage 1/13: 4515.

An impressive coin which is well-suited for a set of high grade Seated halves or a Civil War-themed collection.
