The 1855-1858 Philadelphia double eagle date run contains four undervalued dates, all of which are scarce in AU58 and rare in Uncirculated. The 1857 is most similar in overall rarity to the 1858 and this date is not often seen in AU58 with natural color and choice surfaces.

This attractive example shows deep yellow and orange-gold surfaces with some contrasting darker hues seen on the relief details. There is a considerable amount of underlying mint luster and the surfaces are mostly clean without the heavy scuffs which characterize this issue.

The last NGC AU58 1857 $20.00 with CAC approval to sell at auction realized $4,230 as Heritage 7/15: 4618.

An Uncirculated 1857 double eagle--if available--would cost at least twice as much as this pleasing AU58 and it would represent an "overspend" for most collectors.

CAC has approved 18 in this grade with 10 finer.
