After low mintage issues during the Civil War (and no coins struck in 1864) the San Francisco mint produced a comparatively high number of quarter eagles in 1865. There were 23,376 quarter eagles dated 1865-S and this is a reasonably available coin in circulated grades although nice AU58s with original color and choice surfaces are harder to acquire than their population figures would suggest.

This piece shows the “right” color for the issue with a strong reddish-orange tinge noted on the obverse and, less so, on the reverse. Both sides are lustrous and clean with no significant marks. A small area of discoloration can be seen on the obverse rim around 9:00.

Two NGC AU58 examples were sold at auction by Heritage in 2012. One realized $2,192 while the other brought $2,070. Neither was approved by CAC.

This is the most affordable Civil War quarter eagle from this mint.
