The 1857-O is the final New Orleans quarter eagle. It is only marginally scarce in the lower AU grades but properly graded AU58′s with original color and choice surfaces are hard to locate.

This yellow-gold slider shows a natural appearance with nice coloration atop clean frosty surfaces. The strike is sharp with the exception of the eagle’s right leg which shows the customary softness. There is just a slight amount of rub on the high spots but this piece appears to have no real signs of circulation.

The only PCGS/CAC AU58 to sell at auction in recent years brought $2,585 as Heritage 8/13: 4983. Four NGC AU58 APR’s exist from 2013 to the present and these have a price ranging from a low of $1,998 to a high of $2,350.

A PCGS/CAC MS61 would sell for double the price of this nice AU58 and probably would not be all that much different in terms of its appearance.

CAC shows a potentially inflated population of 17 in this grade with eight finer.
