Old Holder. By today’s standards, I estimate the grade of this coin to be VF30.
The 1849-D is a much scarcer date than any of the 1843-1848 quarter eagles from this mint but in lower grades it brings virtually no premium.
This evenly worn example shows nice orange-gold color with some splashes of steel-blue towards the rim on the obverse. The surfaces show small ticks consistent with the grade.
Only three PCGS VF20 examples have sold at auction since the beginning of 2010.
An affordable, visually appealing Dahlonega quarter eagle.
