The 1846-C is among the very scarcest quarter eagles from the Charlotte mint. As few as 100-125 are known from the mintage of 4,808 and these are often very well worn with VF and EF examples being most often seen. In properly grade AU, there re fewer than two dozen known and this date is expensive and extremely rare in Uncirculated.

This light yellow-gold example shows a good amount of luster and the strike is far above average for the issue. There is some roughness in the fields and this is seen on virtually all known examples; this is due to the mint being closed in 1845 due to a fire and not having new dies on hand when it reopened in 1846.

The last PCGS AU55 1846-C quarter eagle to sell at auction was ex Teletrade 7/10: 2640 at $6,440; an NGC AU55 sold for $5,875 in Heritage’s 11/12 sale. Neither of these two coins was as choice, in my opinion, as the current example.
