VERY SCARCE UNCIRCULATED 1847 QUARTER EAGLE

This date is not as scarce as the 1844 or 1848 in higher grades but is is rarer than the 1843, 1845 and 1849 and comparable to the 1846. There are an estimated 15 or so Uncirculated 1847 quarter eagles known with most in the MS60 to MS62 range.

This choice, frosty example is characterized by fiery natural orange-gold color which gives it especially good eye appeal for the grade. There are a few noticeable scuffs in the obverse fields which limit the grade but I tired this coin a number of times for a 62 grade as it has such good luster and color.

Only one 1847 in PCGS MS61 has appeared at auction since early 2010(this coin) and a full pedigree is listed below.

The P mint quarter eagles from the 1840's form an interesting group of coins with many being very undervalued, in my opinion.

Ex Heritage 9/16: 13333 where it sold for $3,760.
