AMONG THE FINEST KNOWN 1895 $2.50s: A GLOWING NGC MS67
The 1895 is the last of the run of low mintage circulation strike production for quarter eagles that started in 1880. Gems are scarce, while superb pieces of the quality of this example are all but unheard-of.
This glowing Gem shows lovely rich orange-gold color over very heavily frosted surfaces. Only a few teeny-tiny marks can be seen even under 5x magnification.
Just three NGC MS67’s have sold at auction—including this exact coin—have ever sold at auction and none since 2021. In 2019, Legend Auctions sold a PCGS MS67 for $11,750 while in 2021, the same firm sold another piece, this graded MS66+ by PCGS/NGC, for $15,275.
A clever collector might be savvy to downgrade this coin to PCGS MS66+, and then try to get it approved by CAC.
