The 1847-D is among the half dozen most available quarter eagles from this mint and it is an excellent issue for type purposes due to the fact that it tends to be well made. It is also found with nice color and surfaces more often than other Dahlonega quarter eagles from this decade.
This deep green-gold example has a pleasing natural appearance with a good amount of dirt in the recessed areas, especially on the reverse. It is well detailed with just a touch of weakness seen at the central reverse. The surfaces are clean and choice with no marks out of keeping with the assigned grade.
The last two APR’s for NGC AU55 examples of this date are $2,760 and $2,645, respectively. Neither was as choice or original as the present example, in my opinion.
At less than $3,000, this represents very good value for the beginning collector.
