Only 1,632 business strike 1877 quarter eagles were produced, giving this among the lowest emissions for any quarter eagle of this type. The 1877 is scarce in all grades and it is rare in properly graded MS60 to MS62.
This beautifully toned example shows warm reddish-gold hues on both sides and I can’t recall having seen such rich hues on any other 1877 quarter eagle. A shallow scrape over Liberty’s head precludes a grade at least one full point higher but it is not easy to see without tiling the surfaces towards a light source. The eye appeal of this coin is exceptional.
A non-CAC PCGS MS61 sold for $3,351 as Heritage 4/13: 5528.
CAC has approved four in MS61 with three finer.
