The 1876-S quarter eagle has a mintage of just 5,000. It is not as rare as the low mintage half eagle and eagle of this year but it is still a hard coin to locate in properly graded AU58.

This is one of the nicer sliders of this date that I have seen with nearly full mint luster and nice light orange-gold color atop light scuffed surfaces. As on all known examples, there is a mint-made diagonal bar on the jaw of Liberty.

There have been no PCGS AU58 examples of this date sold at auction since Heritage 8/07: 2880. The last two NGC AU58′s brought $1,998 and $2,115, respectively, in May 2013 and November 2012.

This is the only CAC approved example in AU58 with two finer (both in MS62).
