THE DALLAS BANK COLLECTION/GILDED AGE 1857 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1857 is more available than the 1855 and 1856 Philadelphia double eagles and it compares to the 1858 in overall rarity. It becomes a scarce issue in Uncirculated with the majority of those known in the MS60 to MS62 range. It is extremely rare in MS63 and above.
This piece appears very conservatively graded to me as it has the naked eye appearance of an MS62. It is very well struck and satiny with exceptionally clean surfaces lacking the usually-seen extensive abrasions. There are some light scuffs in the left obverse field and a small, very faint grease stain close to the lips of Liberty.
No PCGS MS60 1857 double eagle with CAC approval has sold at auction with this exception of this piece; see below.
This well-pedigreed coin has sold just twice since 2001 and it is a very special piece for the advanced Liberty Head double eagle specialist.
CAC has approved three in this grade with seven finer.
Ex Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 12015 where it brought $12,925, Gilded Edge collection, Stacks/Sotheby’s 10/01: 18 where it brought $10,350, Dallas Bank collection (Jeff Browning).
