The underrated 1857 double eagle is a scarce issue in properly graded AU58 and higher and it is seldom seen in Uncirculated.
This “Gem Slider” has nearly full luster and virtually no wear on either side. It shows nice light yellow-gold and rose colors with the obverse a bit less boldly hued than the reverse. There are a number of faint mint-made grease stains in the right obverse field that can be seen with the naked eye.
The last NGC AU58 to sell at auction was Heritage 4/11: 6794 (not approved by CAC) that brought $3,450.
CAC has approved nine 1857 double eagles in AU58 with only two finer.
