NICE EXTREMELY FINE 1856 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1856 is, along with the 1855, one of the scarcest pre-1859 double eagles from the Philadelphia mint. Many are graded EF40 and EF45 but the majority have been cleaned or dipped and show a plethora of abrasions.
This pleasing, undipped example is a textbook coin for the grade with deep, rich color on both sides. The only marks of note are clustered above the W in TWENTY on the reverse.
No PCGS EF40 1856 double eagle has sold at auction since 2002. A dipped-out, non-CAC NGC EF40 sold for $2,233 as Heritage 1/14: 10213.
A pleasing, affordable coin with real warmth and character.
CAC has approved this one coin in EF40 with 58 finer.
