Small Date variety.
The 1854 Small date is considerably scarcer than the 1851, 1852 and 1853 double eagles but not as scarce as the 1855, 1856 and 1857. It is seen most often in the EF40 to AU50 range and it is usually bright, baggy and not very attractive.
This is a textbook coin for the grade with very good detail, choice original color and extremely clean surfaces. It lacks enough luster to rightfully call it AU but, in my opinion, it is more attractive than most 1854 Small date I see in AU50 and AU53 holders.
The last auction record for an EF45 example of this variety is Heritage 10/11: 4432, slabbed by NGC and not approved by CAC, which sold for $2,300.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with 24 finer.
