The 1854-S is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for San Francisco double eagles. It is an odd date in that while dozens are known in Uncirculated, virtually all are shipwreck coins with seawater surfaces. Any 1854-S double eagle which has original surfaces is rare.
This piece is clearly not a seawater coin and it lacks the diagnostic obverse die crack through the 18 in the date, which distinguishes these coins. It is lustrous and shows nice natural greenish-gold, rose and orange colors with better than normal surfaces and good overall detail.
The rarity of this date has become better known in the last decade and it is now recognized as one of the two or three key San Francisco issues in the Type One date run.
