GEM SLIDER 1853 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1853 double eagle is a common issue in circulated grades but few AU58′s exist which are true “gem sliders” as is this coin. Most seen are either dipped and baggy or overly dirty with a distinct lack of eye appeal.
This is a textbook coin for the grade with deep natural orange-gold color with some underlying reddish accents. This piece seems to have never been lightened or “improved” and the lustrous surfaces are free of all but the most insignificant abrasions.
The last PCGS/CAC AU58 to sell at auction brought $4,060 as Heritage 11/14: 4065. It was overly dirty and very abraded with poor eye appeal.
This is a great 1853 double eagle for the Type One collector who appreciates true originality.
CAC has approved 29 in this grade with 11 finer.
