The 1851-O is one of the two most available New Orleans double eagles along with the 1852-O. It is usually seen in EF40 to AU50 grades and it is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55, especially with natural color and clean surfaces.

While weakly detailed on the radial lines of the obverse stars, this is still a very high end example with very clean surfaces, a good deal of semi-prooflike luster and nice natural green-gold color. This date is typically seen with extensive marks and bright, unappealing surfaces and any AU example with as much eye appeal as this coin is worth a strong premium.

In 2012, there were four NGC AU53 1851-O double eagles sold at auction but none were CAC approved. These brought between $6,896 and $7,475.

This is a perfect type coin for the collector who wants a high quality New Orleans double eagle but whose budget does not allow for the $17,500-20,000 which is required to own an accurately graded AU58.

CAC has approved six in this grade with 10 finer.
