The 1867 is one of my favorite “sleeper” dates in the entire Liberty Head half eagle series. Only 6,870 were issued and around 70-80 are known today. This date saw extensive commercial use and most survivors are in the VF-EF range. Properly graded About Uncirculated 1867 half eagles are very rare and only two Uncirculated pieces are known to me with the finest being a PCGS MS61 which sold for $16,450 in a 2014 Heritage auction.

This well-detailed, evenly worn example shows extensive deep magenta color at the lower obverse and at much of the reverse periphery. The surfaces show a few small, scattered marks but are reasonably clean for the date and the grade. The eye appeal is clearly above average for the issue.

The only EF45 1867 half eagle to sell at auction since 2009 was a PCGS coin without CAC approval which realized $2,585 as Heritage 4/15: 6224.

At less than $3,000, this coin represents really exceptional value for the savvy gold coin collector.

CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer (55 and 58). Only six have been approved for the date.
