The 1871 is an underrated Reconstruction Era half dollar which is fairly easy to find in grades up to MS62 but scarce finer and very rare as a Gem. Properly graded MS64′s are about as nice as this date is generally found.

The frosty borderline Gem has golden centers framed by splashes of rich reddish-gold. The strike is absolutely hammered and there are just a few small ticks seen in the fields. The eye appeal is well above-average for the date and the grade.

A non-CAC PCGS MS64 sold for $1,880 as Heritage 7/15: 3967 and the Gardner III: 98485 coin, graded MS64 by PCGS and approved by CAC sold for $3,525.

Coins such as this seem like wonderful value at under $3,000!

CAC has approved four in this grade with nothing finer.
