Only 900 business strike 1883 three dollar gold pieces were made but survivors are more available than one might believe due to contemporary hoarding of these low production issues. Still, the 1883 three is a desirable coin and it is certainly very affordable considering its low mintage.
This fresh-to-the-market example is very frosty with splendid rich reddish-gold color at the obverse border nicely contrasted by medium green-gold at the centers; the obverse shows lighter hues in a slightly different configuration. The fields are very clean with just a few wispy lines and no signs of circulation or mishandling. The eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.
The last three MS61 examples of this date (two NGC’s and a PCGS) all brought $4,700.
It is hard to imagine that the savvy collector can obtain a nice Uncirculated 1883 three dollar, a coin with a mintage of 900, for less than $5,000.
