The 1847-D is among the more available Dahlonega quarter eagles in higher grades but it is still rare in Uncirculated with fewer than 15 known to exist. In properly graded MS62, it is very rare although there are at least two or three known in MS64 and two Gems. The finest is the Duke’s Creek:  1509 coin, graded MS65 by NGC, which sold for $74,750 in 2006.

This bright, lustrous example shows yellow-gold color which is characteristic of the issue. There is some flatness on the high spots which is strike and which should not be confused with wear and the eagle’s wings are not totally brought up. A small mint-made defect from the rim into star six serves as identification; a die scratch from stars two to four and die lines at 9:00 are as made.

The last PCGS MS62 1847-D quarter eagle to sell at auction Heritage 8/10: 3419 which sold for $11,500. The all-time auction record for a PCGS MS62 is $17,250, set by Heritage 2/99: 6160.

If you collect Dahlonega quarter eagles by date, you know the significance of any nice MS62, regardless of issue. If you collect by type and are searching for that “special” piece, give this 1847-D some consideration.

Only two finer 1847-D quarter eagles have been graded by PCGS.
