The 1893-CC is numismatically significant as the final double eagle to be struck at the Carson City mint before it closed later in this year. It is an issue which didn’t see much circulation and the typical survivor tends to come in the AU55-MS61 range with numerous bagmarks from mishandling.
This frosty example lacks the often-seen spotting and/or deep abrasions and it is a truly “new” coin with no rub on the high spots or luster breaks in the fields. Both sides show nice natural medium orange-gold color and there are just a few areas of scuffiness in the fields which limit a higher grade.
The last NGC MS61 example to sell at auction brought $14,688 as Heritage 1/15: 4366 and $15,275 as Heritage 8/14: 5736.
Unspotted MS62′s bring $20,000-22,000 when available, making this nice MS61 a good value for the savvy date collector of CC double eagles.
