The 1865-S is the most available of the five Civil War San Francisco double eagles made at the San Francisco mint. It is not hard to locate in AU55 although most examples in this range are not original.
This lustrous piece shows a typical strike for the issue with some weakness at the central obverse. The surfaces show scattered moderate abrasions. This piece is nicely toned and doesn’t appear to be from the S.S. Brother Jonathan hoard.
No PCGS AU55 example of this date has sold at auction since Heritage 1/10: 4124 which brought $3,163. The last three NGC AU55′s have brought $4,113, $3,672 and $3,525; none were CAC approved.
An affordable yet above average Type One double eagle.
