Along with the 1856 and 1857, the 1855 is one of a trio of undervalued sleeper Type One double eagles from the Philadelphia mint. It is not often seen in grades higher than AU53 to AU55 and most of the coins in 53 holders are baggy and bright.
This choice green-gold example is very high end for the grade with attractive even green-gold color which indicates its originality. There is a good deal of remaining luster and the surfaces show just a few minor scuffs. A small, faint obverse scratch up from the rim below the throat to star one is likely the only reason this coin didn’t grade at least one level higher.
There are no recent ARP’s for CAC approved PCGS AU53 1855 double eagles. A non-CAC PCGS AU53 sold for $3,250 as Heritage 2/14: 4818.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 17 finer.
