Small Date.
1854 double eagles are known with Small Date and Large Date punches. The former is far more available but it is far from the common date that some people assume. Properly graded 1854 double eagles are quite scarce and this issue is genuinely rare in full Uncirculated.
This frosty slider has an excellent overall appearance with nearly full luster and considerably more vibrancy than usual for the issue; many 1854 Small Date double eagles have dull, satiny luster. The color is an appealing light yellow-gold with slight greenish undertones and the fields lack the severe marks seen on most examples.
The last PCGS AU58 to sell at auction brought $4,994 in Heritage’s 6/13 sale and only two others have crossed the block since the end of 2009.
The next grade up will cost you at least 2x the amount of a nice AU58, making this example a very practical choice for the typical Type One collector.
