The 1839-C half eagle is a desirable one-year type. It is not as well known as its counterpart the 1838-C, but it is actually a rarer issue in terms of its overall rarity. The 1839-C is not often seen in collector grades and attractive, affordable examples have acquired strong multiple levels of demand in the last few years.
In terms of sharpness, this coin grades at least EF45, if not better. It shows characteristic light green-gold color with some reddish-gold undertones at the central reverse. On the obverse, there are a few ultra-fine mint-made laminations, as struck including one between stars two and three that should not be confused with a scratch. There are fewer marks than normal and this is a solid, pleasing example.
The last APR for an 1839-C half eagle in this grade is Stacks 3/09: 5883 which brought $3,450. There have been a total of six sold at auction, all graded by PCGS, since the beginning of 2007 with prices ranging from a low of $2,990 (cheap!) to a high of $4,025.
A very acceptable example of an issue which I have championed for years.
