The 1864 gold dollar is not as scarce as the 1863 or 1865 but this Civil War issue is even scarcer than its mintage of 3,700 business strikes would suggest. It is usually seen in lower grades or, from time to time, in Gem but very seldom in the AU55 to MS63 range.
This example is semi-prooflike on the obverse and frosty on the reverse. It is struck in light green-gold and has even, attractive coloration. The surfaces lack any significant marks and there is no rub on the high spots or obvious luster breaks in the fields.
Heritage 3/13: 4092, graded MS62 by NGC, sold for $2,115 while a PCGS MS62 sold for $2,333 as Heritage 1/13: 6803.
An affordable example of this scarce, historically significant gold dollar.
