Housed in an old “fatty” holder but not upgradable in my opinion.
New collectors may find this hard to believe but before thousands of 1857-S double eagles were found on the S.S. Central America, this date was actually not often seen in Choice AU.
This example is totally original with attractive deep rose-gold and greenish colors, in slightly different hues, on the obverse and reverse. A good deal of mint frost can be seen and there is light wear only on the high spots. On the reverse, there is a long, thin mint-made grease stain through the left side of the device.
The last NGC AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 7/12: 5081 which brought $3,450. It was not as nice as the current example and it, curiously, also showed a grease stain on the reverse.
