Coin Description
It is estimated that around 20 Original Proof half cents were struck in 1846 and an estimated half of these exist, mostly in the PR62 to PR64 range. This date is almost never seen with Mint red and it is one of the rarer Proofs from the 1840′s, despite no real price premium over more available dates.
This reflective glossy brown example shows underlying lavender and greenish hues. There are some light hairlines on the left obverse field which limit the grade but this piece has no spotting and has a nice appearance overall.
The last PCGS PR63 example of this date/variety sold for $7,775 as Heritage 8/06: 135.
An important coin for the specialist.
