ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1839-O NO DRAPERY DIMES
Fortin-104. Large O.
The Stars Obverse type with No Drapery was short-lived with coins struck from 1838 through 1841. New Orleans produced only two issues employing this design and the 1839-O is the more available. There are a few dozen known in Uncirculated and around five or six Gem to Superb Gem pieces exist, including a PCGS MS67+ in the Simpson collection and another PCGS MS67, owned by a Pennsylvania specialist.
This amazing coin is lightly toned in pale champagne and lilac hues and it is essentially “as made” with rich mint frost drizzled on either side and a virtual absence of marks. The strike is very sharp as this is an early die state of this variety with only a small crack seen from the right ribbon end down to the reverse rim at 5:00. PCGS has only graded three New Orleans dimes at this lofty level and I have never personally owned another Liberty Seated New Orleans dime of any date which was as technically close to perfection as this amazing example.
Bowers and Merena 1/08: 108, graded MS67 by PCGS, realized $35,650.
This is an exceptional coin which will appeal to the Seated Dime specialist, the collector of Gem New Orleans silver or the type collector seeking the absolute finest quality.
