SCARCE 1841-D $5 VARIETY

Variety 6-KK. Tall D mintmark. One of only three or four known of this variety and a very late die state with the massive obverse break totally bisecting the obverse.

Really a remarkable coin as the obverse crack could not have held together to make many more coins before it broke for good; never to be used again. The coin itself is also pretty remarkable as it shows clear, crisp definition below russet and olive-gold colors. A large scrape in the lower left obverse field is detracting and without this, it would carry a 10k price tag.

Heritage 5/2022: 4776 was graded PCGS/CAC AU53, and it sold for $12,000. It is actually not as nice as the coin I’m offering here and how it was approved by CAC is beyond me.

The 1841-D is among my all-time favorite D mint half eagles and this rare variety will make an excellent addition to an advanced half eagle set.
