The 1857-D is a slightly scarcer issue in grades through AU55. In any Uncirculated grade, it is rare and underappreciated.
This is a solid coin for the grade with some light green-gold hues seen atop highly lustrous surfaces. A bit of weakness is seen on the curls below the IBER in LIBERTY.
Not a single PCGS/CAC AU53 example of this date has ever sold at auction. Stacks Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC AU50 in March 2023 for $6,600.
A good type coin for the collector looking for a single half eagle from Dahlonega.
CAC has approved two in AU53 with13 finer.
