SCARCE AND UNDERVALUED 1851-D $5, PCGS/CAC AU53
The 1851-D is a much scarcer date in the Dahlonega half eagle series. It is not often seen finer than AU53 to AU55, and it is an especially difficult issue to locate with good eye appeal.
This is among the nicer circulated examples of this date that I have offered even though it is “only” an AU53. The characteristically weak central strike (most notable on the obverse) has caused PCGS to understate the grade of this coin, in my opinion. Both sides show deep, even green-gold hues and this is among a small handful of 1851-D half eagles which have never been brightened. If you are a student of this series, you’ll appreciate the quality and originality of this piece.
There is just one APR for this date in PCGS/CAC AU53 since 2019 and it was Stack’s Bowers 2023ANA:7061 at $6,000.
You’ll likely have a difficult time locating a significantly finer 1851-D half eagle than this and if you do, prepare to spend close to—if not over—five figures.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 16 finer.
