1836 $2.50 GRADED MS64 BY PCGS/CAC, ex Bass
Script 8 variety. HM-4, R-1. A common variety.
With just four coins graded higher than MS64, the 1836 is a condition rarity within the popular but short-lived Classic Head quarter eagle series.
This intensely yellow-gold example is as nice a coin for the assigned grade as you’ll likely find. A few minor shallow scuffs on both sides preclude a higher grade than MS64, but this coin is totally unadulterated with superb mint frost.
The only comparable APR is for $18,000, and this was the sale of the Stack’s 2022 ANA: 5012 coin, ex Daryl Haynor. In July 2020, Legend Auctions sold a PCGS/CAC MS64+ for $21,738. No PCGS 65s have ever sold via auction.
If one were available, you’d have to spend over $50,000 for a PCGS/CAC MS65, making this high-end MS64 a great value for the advanced type collector.
CAC has approved eight in MS64 with just two finer (both MS65).
Ex: Goldberg 5/2009 auction at $11,213; earlier sold for $9,775 in the same firm’s 2/2003 sale, and before this sold for $9,775 as Lot 290 in the Bowers and Merena 10/1999 Bass auction, Harry Bass Collection.
