SCARCE PCGS AU58 1861-S QUARTER EAGLE
The 1861-S is one of the scarcer Liberty Head quarter eagles from San Francisco. It is not often seen in the higher AU grades, and it is very rare in full Uncirculated with likely not more than four or five known.
This bright example displays very slight friction on the high spots but it likely never saw actual circulation. The strike is very bold and the surfaces are sufficiently clean enough to easily merit the assigned AU58 grade. A tiny dark speck located just under the second star is mint-made and it is mentioned for accuracy.
DLRC sold a PCGS AU58 for $9,150 in 9/2021 that looked like a science project gone rogue. In their 7/2020 auction, Legend sold a CAC approved PCGS AU58 which in all seriousness was no nicer than the coin I’m offering here for a very strong $17,038.
Unless you are extremely patient and have the $20k++ required to wait for a PCGS MS61 example, this 1861-S is likely the best you’ll find.
