PCGS MS62+ 1865 $20.00
Prior to shipwreck findings for this date, the 1865 $20 was considered to be a rare issue in any Unciruclated grade, and a significant rarity in any grade approaching the Gem level. Close to 300 attractive Unciruclated 1865 $20s were found on the S.S. Republic and after being graded by NGC, the numbers swelled in grades as high as MS64; Gems remained scarce.
While not indicated on the slab label, this fresh-appearing PCGS MS62+ is almost certainly from the shipwreck. It faces up like an MS63 to MS64, but close inspection shows a few wispy lines which limit the grade. That said, this choice 1865 clearly deserves the “+” it was awarded by PCGS.
In 9/2024 Heritage sold a PCGS MS62 example for $14,400, and in 12/2022 the same firm sold another 1865 $20 in PCGS MS62 for $13,200.
A wise choice for an advanced Civil War double eagle set.
