VERY HIGH END PCGS/CAC EF45 1857-O $20, ex Fairmont
With no less than 13 (and counting) examples of the 1857-O released so far from the Fairmont Hoard, collectors mistakenly believe that nice, original EF and AU 1857-O $20s are common. But for those of us a little longer in the tooth, until recently, you almost never saw an 1857-O; let alone one that had the superb appearance displayed by this example.
I grade this coin a solid AU50 and it has wonderful reddish and orange-gold flashes in the recesses with an overtone of rich russet. There is a lot of luster still present and no marks of note save for a natural planchet flake near the final star on the obverse. I like this coin a lot more than the non-CAC PCGS AU50 that Stack’s Bowers sold for $12,600 in the non-Fairmont offerings in the 11/2024 auction, or any of the other 57-Os graded AU50 by either service sold since 2020.
If you are a clever collector, you’ll buy this coin right now—when it is out-of-favor—as opposed to a year or two down the road when everyone is looking for a nice 1857-O $20. And believe me, this will happen sooner than later.
