RARE AND IMPORTANT 1797 DIME 13 STARS

JR-2, R-4.

There are two distinct types of 1797 Dimes: one with 13 obverse stars (JR-2) and the second with 16 stars (JR-1). These appear to be fairly similar in overall rarity but the 13 stars variety is definitely the scarcer of the two in higher grades. Viewed as a date, the 1797 is rare in any AU grade and excessively rare in MS60 and finer. There are just three Uncirculated 1797 JR-2 Dimes known, with the finest being the wonderful PCGS MS64 that last sold at auction for $176,250 back in May 2015.

This is the sole AU58 1797 13 Stars Dime in PCGS AU58. It is well-struck with uncommonly sharp overall definition and a lack of definitive wear. The color is a handsome light, even grey with some pale rose highlights in the protected areas. The luster is a little less pronounced than one would like to see on a coin in AU58 but it is clearly evident underlying the aforementioned coloration. For the date and grade, the eye appeal is well above-average and this is unquestionably a coin ranking well within the Condition Census for 1797 JR-2 Dimes.

This exact coin (see below) is the sole PCGS AU58with just two finer: an MS62+ and an MS64.

An extremely important coin!

Ex: Stack’s Bowers 9/2025: 3029 where it sold for $30,000 and earlier Heritage 4/2014: 5561 where it sold for $38,188.
