1877 $10, PCGS AU55

Guess how many Liberty Head eagles have a lower circulation strike mintage than the 1877? With just 797 produced, the 1877 has the third lowest figure, trailing only the 1875 (an absurdly low 100 were made), and the 1876 (with a mintage of 687). There are around four dozen or so business strike 1877 eagles which puts it on a par with the 1876 and the low-mintage 1873. Despite this fact, it is less expensive than its two counterparts ans it is undervalued, as a result.

This light green-gold example is a bit bright but it is less marked than usual for this issue. I have seen very, very few 1877 eagles with decent eye appeal and I’m not sure there is a single coin currently known that I’d describe as “choice.” The best I’ve seen by a substantial amount was the unique PCGS/CAC MS61 that brought $64,625 back in March 2015.

In my opinion, the current PCGS population of “12” in AU55 is substantially inflated by resubmissions. I doubt if there are more than three or four distinct coins in AU55 and finer that are even solid for the grade as is this example.

The only PCGS AU55 1877 eagle to sell at auction in over 10 years brought $20,400 as Heritage 10/2022: 3265.
