RARE 1841-O $10.00 GRADED EF40 BY PCGS

The 1841-O eagle is a rare and numismatically significant issue. It is the very first coin of this denomination to be produced at the New Orleans mint, and an estimated 50-60 exist from a mintage of only 1,500. I regard it as the second scarcest No Motto eagle from this mint after the 1859-O, and in properly graded AU and above it is the rarest eagle of this type from New Orleans.

The 1841-O is seldom available in EF grades as evidenced by the low frequency of appearance at auction. No PCGS EF40 example has sold since July, 2010, and since 2012 there have been three APRs for PCGS EF45 coins. In 2022, there were two sales recorded for this date in PCGS EF45: $26,400 for a nice Fairmont coin sold as Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 3229, and $22,800 for a coin of equal quality to the one I am selling.

This green-gold example has a number of abrasions as seen on every 1841-O eagle I am aware of but none are overly deep or detracting. Most importantly, the surfaces are original and have not been messed with as is seen on at virtually all of the surviving pieces. For the date and the grade, I regard this as a very nice coin and it is genuinely difficult to locate as such.

I purchased this coin out of the recent Stack’s Bowers 2024 ANA auction for $14,400, which I felt was extremely cheap considering I would have paid close to $20,000.

In my opinion this date remains undervalued and for most collectors, this choice example represents the best available 1841-O eagle.
